What the questions cover

A simple 3-week study plan

  1. Week 1 – Read the handbook once, slowly. Don't try to memorise. Just understand the story, especially the history chapter.
  2. Week 2 – Practise chapter by chapter. Answer questions on one chapter a day. Write down every date, name and number you get wrong.
  3. Week 3 – Take full mock tests. 24 questions in 45 minutes, like the real thing. When you score 21 or more out of 24 several times in a row, you're ready to book.

Tips that make the difference

How to book

Book only through the official GOV.UK service. Search "Life in the UK test GOV.UK". Be careful with websites that charge extra to book for you – the official fee is £50.

Is the test changing?

The government has said it plans to update the test in the future, but as of November 2026 no new test, handbook or date has been announced. The current 3rd-edition handbook is still the one to study.
